Delhi-NCR residents can look forward to a more vibrant Diwali celebration this year, as the Supreme Court has permitted the sale and use of ‘green crackers’ across the region. The landmark decision, issued just before the festival, allows for the bursting of these eco-friendly alternatives from October 18th to 21st. This comes after the Delhi government petitioned the court to ease firecracker restrictions, emphasizing the use of environmentally compliant options. The court’s ruling allows for specific bursting windows: from 6 AM to 7 AM and again from 8 PM to 10 PM on Diwali. The Supreme Court stressed the importance of a balanced approach, permitting moderate use of certified green crackers while prioritizing environmental protection. Authorities are tasked with strict monitoring of air quality and compliance, with a review scheduled in three weeks to assess the long-term viability of this decision. Only NEERI and PESO-certified green crackers are permitted, and their sale will be closely monitored, with licenses subject to suspension if fake products are found.
