Handloom Artisans Honored as India Celebrates Heritage on August 7

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated National Handloom Day by affirming that the sector is vital for achieving the dream of an Atmanirbhar Bharat.

He lauded the creativity and perseverance of handloom weavers, noting that their work links ancient Indus Valley traditions with contemporary design trends. The government intends to expand incentives, digital platforms, and export opportunities for the industry.

Modi encouraged citizens to post videos of their preferred handloom items, adding that such engagement will amplify the sector’s reach both domestically and abroad.

The observance, held each year on August 7, commemorates more than a century of indigenous textile movement and recognizes the 3.522 million artisans, over 72% of whom are women.
