Hidden on Andhra Hills: The Temple of Narasimha’s Triumph

Tucked away on Simhachalam Hill near Visakhapatnam, an ancient shrine commemorates the dramatic moment when Lord Narasimha emerged to rescue young Prahlad. Unlike most temples oriented eastward, this west-facing structure houses a sandalwood-covered idol that is unveiled only once a year. Pilgrims climb nearly 300 meters to reach the complex, where intricate carvings and towering gateways showcase a fusion of Chola and Vijayanagara craftsmanship. Historical records indicate that Krishnadevaraya, the celebrated Vijayanagara ruler, visited the site and donated villages and jewels still referenced in temple inscriptions. Today, the sanctum continues to celebrate major festivals including Narasimha Jayanti, Kalyanotsavam, and Navratri, each drawing massive crowds. The serene Pushkarini and Gangadhara water bodies nearby add to the temple’s timeless aura. Visitors often combine darshan with leisure stops at nearby beaches and parks, making Simhachalam a holistic destination that merges myth, architecture, and natural beauty.
