IMD Issues Weather Warning for Tamil Nadus Southern Region
A weather advisory has been issued for southern Tamil Nadu as atmospheric disturbances trigger forecasts of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. The Indian Meteorological Department predicts that Theni, Dindigul, and Madurai will experience significant downpours during Thursday’s daylight hours.
The unsettled weather is being driven by a developing low-pressure system that has brought increased moisture and cloud cover to the region. While heavy rain is the primary expectation in the southern districts, moderate rainfall is also likely in scattered pockets across northern Tamil Nadu and areas adjacent to the Western Ghats.
Safety warnings have been issued due to the high likelihood of lightning accompanying the heavy showers. The weather department projects that the system will continue to evolve, with heavy rainfall expected to cover seven districts by Friday. The affected areas will include Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, and Sivaganga.
In the metropolitan area, Chennai is forecast to remain partly cloudy. Light to moderate rain is anticipated in specific localities, though the distribution will be uneven. Municipal authorities are monitoring the situation closely as rainfall intensity tends to vary significantly from one neighborhood to another.
Currently in the Northeast Monsoon phase, Tamil Nadu relies heavily on this seasonal rainfall to sustain its water infrastructure. The expected precipitation will play a critical role in restoring reservoir levels and irrigating farmlands. However, inadequate drainage infrastructure in certain low-lying zones poses a risk of temporary waterlogging, which may disrupt daily commutes and vehicular movement. Residents are urged to stay informed and plan their travel accordingly.
