A memorandum was submitted to the Lok Sabha Speaker by Members of Parliament from various political parties, initiating the process to remove Justice Yashwant Varma. The impeachment motion, supported by 145 Lok Sabha members, references Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution. The signatories include MPs from diverse parties such as the Congress, TDP, JDU, and others. Noteworthy names on the motion include Anurag Singh Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Rahul Gandhi, and Supriya Sule.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced receipt of a separate motion, signed by 50 Rajya Sabha MPs, for Justice Varma’s impeachment, following an in-house inquiry into the discovery of semi-burnt cash at his residence after a fire. Dhankhar confirmed that this motion also meets the required numerical threshold. He inquired with Law Minister Arjum Ram Meghwal about a similar motion in the Lok Sabha. Dhankhar stated that the Secretary-General would take necessary steps in this direction, given the presentation of the motion in both houses. Justice Varma has challenged the inquiry committee’s report and recommendations in the Supreme Court, citing lack of fair opportunity to respond. The controversy arose following a fire at his Delhi High Court residence where cash was allegedly found.
