The Indian Navy is set to significantly enhance its military capabilities with the addition of nine new modern diesel-electric submarines. Negotiations regarding the prices of these submarines are currently underway, after which the proposal will be submitted to the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for approval. These submarines will be constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. India previously collaborated with France’s Naval Group in 2005 under Project-75, resulting in the acquisition of six Scorpene-class submarines. All six submarines, namely Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj, Vela, Vagir, and Vagsheer, have been inducted into the Navy. These submarines are among the most advanced attack submarines globally, capable of evading enemy detection and launching attacks with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles. Furthermore, three new submarines are expected to be added under the follow-on order of Project-75, and contracts are also in progress for six new submarines under Project-75 India, resulting in a total of nine new submarines for the Indian Navy in the coming years. In addition to these, the government has approved the construction of two nuclear attack submarines (SSN), which will further augment the Navy’s strength. The first indigenous SSN submarine is expected to be inducted into the Navy by 2036-37.
