India is bolstering its space security strategy with plans to develop ‘bodyguard satellites.’ These satellites will protect Indian satellites from potential threats and attacks by adversaries. Similar to how the S400 defense system protects against ground-launched missiles, these satellites will safeguard Indian satellites in space from all threats. The government plans to launch approximately 50 surveillance satellites, investing around ₹27,000 crore (USD 3 billion). The first satellite is expected to be launched by 2026, strengthening India’s space-based surveillance capabilities. Currently, India has over 100 satellites, while Pakistan has only 8 and China has over 930. China’s rapidly expanding space program is becoming a concern for both India and the United States. Given the ongoing border tensions with China, including the 2020 Galwan clash, and China’s support to Pakistan with satellite coverage during the May 2025 conflict, India is accelerating its space security efforts.
