In response to a recent tragedy in Mumbai where commuters fell from overcrowded trains, Indian Railways has announced plans to redesign its non-AC trains. The redesign will include automatically closing doors and improved ventilation systems. These changes come after four individuals lost their lives and nine were injured in Thane, Maharashtra, when they fell from overcrowded local trains. The new trains, expected to be ready by November 2025 and in service by January 2026, will feature doors with louvres and roof-mounted ventilation units. Additionally, the coaches will be equipped with vestibules to facilitate passenger movement and distribute crowding more evenly. The Railway Board also mentioned the production of 238 new AC trains for Mumbai’s suburban services.
