India is gearing up for its landmark Census 2027, set to be the nation’s first completely digital enumeration. Following a significant six-year delay, primarily attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, the government is implementing innovative features to ensure accuracy and efficiency. The census process will be divided into two phases, concluding in 2027. A crucial pre-test phase is scheduled from November 10 to 30, 2025, across select areas in all states and Union Territories. This trial run aims to evaluate the operational readiness, test mobile applications, refine survey methods, train enumerators, and streamline logistics. Notably, the legal framework has been updated through Section 17A of the Census Act, 1948, to accommodate a new self-enumeration window, allowing citizens to submit their details digitally between November 1 and 7, 2025. This marks a significant shift towards citizen participation and digital data collection. The census will also include nationwide caste enumeration and geotagging of all buildings using Digital Layout Mapping (DLM) linked to GIS maps. The Housing Listing phase is planned from April to September 2026, followed by Population Enumeration in February 2027, with some mountainous regions starting earlier in September 2026. The extended timeline has enabled authorities to modernize processes and embrace technology for a more robust census.
