Why the August 2026 Moon Eclipse Won’t Affect Indian Festivities

Astronomers have confirmed that the partial lunar eclipse scheduled for 28 August 2026 will not be visible from the Indian subcontinent. The Moon will set before the eclipse reaches its maximum, leaving the sky clear for the traditional Raksha Bandhan rituals.

The sequence of the eclipse begins with a faint penumbral phase at 06:54 IST, followed by the partial phase at 08:04 IST. The greatest obscuration occurs at 09:43 IST, and the partial phase ends at 11:21 IST. The penumbral phase continues until roughly 12:30 IST, but throughout this window the Moon stays below the horizon for observers in India.

Because the eclipse is not observable locally, the customary sutak period – a time of ritual impurity that usually follows an eclipse – is not invoked. Temples remain open, and families can perform the Rakhi tying ceremony, offer prayers, and share sweets without any special restrictions.

The eclipse will be visible in parts of the Western Hemisphere, Europe and some African regions, where a noticeable darkening of the Moon will be seen. In India, the day will be celebrated purely as Raksha Bandhan, with no astronomical interference.
