In a tragic turn of events, the body of 15-year-old Kunal Birua, who drowned in the Sangam River, has been recovered on the fourth day. The incident occurred in the Tantanagar police station area of West Singhbhum. Kunal had gone to the river with friends for a picnic and football match on Saturday when he met with his untimely demise in the deep waters. Local villagers and divers, in a joint effort with the police, successfully retrieved the body from the river.
The news of the recovery has cast a pall of gloom over the entire region, with Kunal’s family inconsolable. Officials, including the SDO of Chaibasa Sadar, Sandeep Anurag Topno, and DSP Bahaman Tuti, visited the site to gather details. They also visited the Nagar police station, where 24 students were initially held for questioning, to ensure the situation remained calm.
Kunal was a student at Saint Xavier’s School in Chaibasa. According to villagers, the group was playing football near the riverbank when the ball accidentally went into the water. Kunal entered the river to retrieve it, but tragically underestimated its depth and drowned. The police have sent the body for post-mortem examination to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital and have initiated a thorough investigation into the incident. Administrative officials have been in constant contact with the grieving family, offering their condolences.
