Khunti district is experiencing a sharp decline in temperatures, with biting cold setting in during the mornings and evenings. Residents are increasingly confined to their homes after dusk due to the severe chill. Worryingly, the administration has yet to initiate any measures, such as distributing warm blankets or arranging bonfires in public areas, to alleviate the suffering of the vulnerable population. The situation is particularly dire for the poor and destitute in both rural and urban Khunti, including laborers who spend their nights on streets, bus stands, and market areas. Unlike previous years, when district authorities typically arranged for bonfires by the first week of November, there appears to be a lack of preparedness this year. Residents lament the absence of usual support systems, noting that the district administration historically provided blankets and bonfires. Local representatives and block administrations have also failed to act, despite weather forecasts predicting further temperature drops. Citizens and social organizations are urging the district administration to swiftly implement cold-weather relief measures, including public bonfires and a blanket distribution drive for the needy, to prevent anyone from enduring freezing nights. Block Development Officer Naveen Chandra Jha stated that blanket supplies have not yet reached the blocks, and Circle Officer Pooja Binha mentioned that no directives have been received from the district regarding bonfire arrangements.
