A young man, Firoz Ali, died by suicide in Ranchi, Jharkhand, shortly after being released on bail. Ali had been arrested and subsequently jailed for allegedly harassing a minor schoolgirl. The incident occurred near Upper Bazaar, under the jurisdiction of the Kotwali police station. A video of the incident, which involved Ali’s inappropriate behavior towards the schoolgirl, went viral on social media. Following the viral video, Chief Minister Hemant Soren ordered the police to take action, leading to Ali’s arrest. The police also paraded Ali through the streets of Ranchi after his arrest, a move that drew considerable attention. Ali had been incarcerated for approximately eight months before being released on bail. He returned home just two days before his death. On Saturday evening, he was found to have hanged himself in his room at his residence in Nala Road, Hindpirhi. Family members rushed him to RIMS Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding his suicide have commenced.
The reason for the suicide is not definitively known. However, it is believed that Ali was under significant stress due to the charges of harassment. The initial incident took place on November 13, 2024, when Ali, riding a scooter, allegedly harassed a schoolgirl near the Kotwali police station. The actions were captured on CCTV, and the footage quickly spread online. The Chief Minister’s office took note of the incident and directed the police to take action. Based on the video evidence, the police identified and arrested Ali, filing serious charges against him before he was sent to jail. His tragic death occurred shortly after his release.
