Ranchi, Jharkhand, a state rich in culture, celebrated the vibrant festival of Sohrai with immense fervor. Observed after Kartik Amavasya, Sohrai holds significant cultural importance, paying homage to the harvest and livestock that sustain the community. The ‘Brihad Jharkhand Sanskriti Kala Manch’ organized a grand ‘Thahre Sohrai’ celebration in the capital city, drawing culture enthusiasts from across the state to Morabadi Maidan. Attendees included individuals from various tribal, indigenous, and other community backgrounds, highlighting the inclusive spirit of the festival.
The celebratory procession moved through the city streets, with participants dancing and singing in traditional attire, making their way from SSP Chowk via Redium Road and Kachahari Chowk to Jaipal Singh Stadium. The event saw the participation of Devendranath Mahto, Vice President of the ‘Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha’, who joined the Sohrai procession.
Upon reaching the stadium, a floral tribute was paid to the statue of Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda, officially marking the commencement of the Akhada exhibition. The large gathering caused considerable traffic congestion, requiring significant efforts from the administration to manage the flow of vehicles. At the stadium’s Sohrai Akhada site, culture lovers joyfully danced and sang. Women contributed to the festival’s success with their traditional rituals and music, while renowned local artists presented captivating performances. The festival beautifully showcased the joy of a new harvest, reverence for farming tools, and affection for animals like bulls and buffaloes.
