The battle for life ended in tragedy for a wild elephant in Jharkhand’s Naxal-affected Kolbonga area. The pachyderm had accidentally stepped on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) earlier this month, causing catastrophic wounds that eventually claimed its life on Thursday. For nearly seven days, the Saranda forest echoed with the silent struggle of this majestic creature as foresters and doctors fought to save it. Immediately after the explosion was reported, the local forest division mobilized resources to provide medical intervention. Treating a wild elephant in the middle of a dense forest presented significant logistical challenges, yet the team managed to provide consistent care. The focus was on preventing the spread of infection and ensuring the animal remained hydrated and fed. Unfortunately, the physical trauma caused by the high-intensity blast was too severe for a recovery. Wildlife enthusiasts and forest officials have expressed profound grief over the loss. The incident highlights the collateral damage caused by human conflicts in wildlife corridors. Dr. Sanjay Gholatkar noted that while the team did everything possible with available medical technology, the damage to the bone and surrounding tissue was irreparable. The department is now preparing for the final rites after the mandatory autopsy is completed.
