Villagers Rush to Rescue After Sudden Soil Collapse in Jharkhand's Coal Belt

A sudden soil and rock collapse struck an illegal coal‑mining shaft on Kumhar Patti Road, Bagmara block, Dhanbad, on Sunday morning. The collapse happened while men and women were inside a makeshift tunnel, cutting coal without official permission.

The impact trapped numerous miners under a thick layer of earth. Community members who heard the commotion arrived within minutes, forming an ad‑hoc rescue crew. They manually removed soil, freeing two women who were critically injured. Unfortunately, both women died before reaching a medical facility.

Rescue operations remain ongoing as locals and authorities work together to locate any additional victims. The event has renewed calls for stricter enforcement against illegal mining practices in Jharkhand’s coal‑rich regions.
