Liechtenstein Prince Visit Highlights $100 Billion EFTA Investment
Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein, currently visiting India, met Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday. The meeting focused on strengthening investment and trade between the two countries.
Discussions centred on cooperation under the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement between India and the European Free Trade Association, known as EFTA. The agreement has been in effect since October 1 last year.
Goyal later posted details of the meeting on X. He said the two leaders explored new investment and trade opportunities, and he outlined India's ongoing reforms to create a more investor-friendly business climate. He also stressed the government's focus on improving ease of doing business.
Goyal described the 100 billion dollar investment commitment under the India-EFTA agreement as a clear sign of both sides' shared ambition for deeper economic involvement. He argued that such investment would fuel economic growth and generate substantial opportunities for businesses and industries in both regions.
On Tuesday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held talks with Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie. The discussions looked at possible partnerships in advanced engineering, infrastructure, and innovation. Both sides agreed that more investment, trade, and economic cooperation could strengthen bilateral ties.
The leaders also shared views on subjects of mutual interest and identified sectors where collaboration through technical expertise and investment could be expanded.
EFTA comprises Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland. Under the agreement, EFTA countries have committed to invest 100 billion dollars in India over 15 years, a move expected to create nearly one million direct jobs.
The India-EFTA Prosperity Summit 2026, held in New Delhi earlier this month, has given fresh impetus to economic relations between India and EFTA, with Liechtenstein emerging as a key focus.
