Madhya Pradesh has launched a fresh offensive against child marriage by placing frontline revenue officers at the center of prevention efforts. Patwaris across the state now hold explicit legal authority to act immediately upon receiving any information about a planned underage wedding in their jurisdiction. This policy change transforms the existing system, which previously relied mainly on police and women and child development department staff. By embedding enforcement powers within the revenue machinery, the government aims to create an early-warning mechanism that functions from the village upward. At the district level, collectors and CEOs of zila panchayats will track progress, while sub-divisional officers will coordinate responses in smaller administrative units. The emphasis remains on rural pockets where community ties often hide planned marriages until it is too late. The decision follows several high-profile cases that revealed how traditional reporting channels failed to prevent unions involving minors. One such incident involved a 13-year-old whose marriage proceeded despite alerts, prompting authorities to register cases against 13 individuals. State officials argue that empowering the patwari, often the most accessible government representative in villages, will close critical information gaps and enable preemptive action rather than post-event legal proceedings.
