Facing mounting opposition, the Maharashtra government has retracted two Government Resolutions (GRs) concerning the implementation of its three-language policy, which included the introduction of Hindi in schools. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the decision following a cabinet meeting in Mumbai. He also stated that a new committee, led by educationist Narendra Jadhav, will be formed to devise a roadmap for the language policy’s execution. Fadnavis noted that the earlier GRs, issued in April and June, initially mandated Hindi as a compulsory subject for students in classes 1 to 5. However, following widespread criticism, the government revised the policy to make Hindi an optional subject. Fadnavis pointed out that former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had previously endorsed recommendations to introduce the three-language policy from class 1 to 12.
