Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra ignited a firestorm of controversy with her remarks concerning illegal infiltration on India’s eastern border. She made a highly contentious statement against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which has been met with widespread criticism. Moitra stated that Amit Shah’s “head should be chopped off and put on the table,” a comment that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape.
Expressing her concerns about alleged infiltration from Bangladesh, Mahua Moitra launched a sharp attack on the central government’s border security policies during a public event. She was quoted saying, “I am asking if there is no one to protect our borders and people from other nations are entering India in lakhs and crores…If they are eyeing our mothers and sisters…If they are taking over our land…At first, Amit Shah’s head must be chopped off and put on the table.”
These remarks drew immediate and strong reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and numerous other political parties. BJP leaders condemned the statement as violent, unconstitutional, and criminal in nature. Many leaders described it as “unparliamentary,” “dangerous,” and an “insult to the dignity of public representation.”
Moitra’s comments were made in the context of alleged illegal infiltration from Bangladesh and the resulting population and security challenges in border areas such as West Bengal. She placed the blame for the situation on the central government, citing a “security failure.”
She further added, “The Home Ministry and the Home Minister who cannot protect the borders of this country…The Prime Minister is himself saying that people from outside are coming here and preying on our mothers and sisters.”
The controversy arises as the central government carries out ‘Operation Pushback,’ aimed at identifying and expelling Rohingya and illegal Bangladeshi citizens residing in the country. However, Moitra insists that despite these efforts, illegal infiltration remains a significant issue, claiming locals do not receive security benefits despite the presence of border agencies. “BSF is here. What is BSF doing? We (natives) remain fearful of the BSF. We do not see anyone infiltrating here,” she stated.
The Border Security Force (BSF), under the Union Home Ministry, has not yet issued an official response. However, some ministry officials have characterized the comments as “politically motivated” and “far from ground reality.” The BJP is planning to raise the issue in Parliament and is considering filing a complaint under various sections of the IPC for threatening the Home Minister and inciting violence. Sources associated with the Home Ministry have labeled Moitra’s remarks a “direct violation of democratic values and national interests.”
While there has been no official response from the TMC leadership, party insiders have expressed discomfort with Moitra’s strong language, even though she continues to criticize BJP policies. This controversy reinforces Mahua Moitra’s image as a vocal and outspoken leader who is not afraid to challenge political norms. The possibility of legal action or a censure motion in Parliament against her cannot be ruled out.
