Infrastructure Projects Continue as Manipur Recovers from Communal Clashes

Manipur’s administration is pressing ahead with its infrastructure agenda despite the lingering effects of the May 2023 ethnic violence. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced that each of the state’s 60 assembly constituencies will receive an allocation of roughly ten crore rupees for the construction and upgrade of inter‑village roads (IVRs). These pathways are intended to improve connectivity in remote hill areas, reduce travel times and stimulate local economies.

The minister also confirmed the launch of a second medical college in Senapati district, building on the earlier establishment of a college in Churachandpur during the previous government’s term. The new institution aims to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in the region and provide advanced medical services to underserved populations.

Singh pointed out that the reopening of the national highway linking Dimapur, Imphal and Guwahati, facilitated by community volunteers, has already begun to lift trade volumes. He expects the improved transport network to help recoup a portion of the GST revenue loss incurred during the unrest.

While acknowledging the economic pain caused by curfews and blockades, the chief minister stressed that continued investment in roads, health facilities and education will lay the foundation for a more resilient Manipur.
