Meghalaya's Petition Against Sonam Raghvanshi's Bail Postponed to July 21

A petition by the Meghalaya state government contesting the bail granted to Sonam Raghvanshi in the murder case of her husband, Indore transport entrepreneur Raja Raghvanshi, has been deferred by the Supreme Court until July 21.

During the earlier hearing, the Supreme Court issued a notice to Sonam and sought her response. The state's Solicitor General, Tushar Mehta, argued that the bail was issued only because the arrest provision suffered a typographical error.

The Court previously refused to stay the bail, noting Sonam's release on the already granted bail. Meghalaya maintains that her freedom poses a flight risk and underscores that the accusations are serious, not merely technical.

Sonam's defense counsel highlighted that she was denied legal assistance at the time of arrest and that police did not clarify the basis for her detention, handing her an empty proforma. The judges questioned the timing of raising this issue and whether a bail predicated on a technical flaw should prevent any subsequent arrest.

The Meghalaya government had earlier challenged a High Court order dated June 29, which upheld the bail and dismissed the state's appeal.
