Meta’s Apology Over PM Modi’s Post Suspension Comes Amid Wider Scrutiny

Meta has issued an apology for temporarily restricting a Facebook post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The company’s chief global affairs officer Joel Kaplan said the apology was sent straight to the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology.

Kaplan, part of a global delegation that met with the minister, acknowledged lapses in the platform’s functioning and pledged corrective action. The delegation also held a separate discussion with IT Secretary S. Krishnan before meeting the minister.

The apology coincides with a growing probe into Meta’s operations in India. Authorities have raised concerns about content moderation, the handling of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and the circulation of deep‑fake content on the company’s platforms.

Earlier, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg had personally apologized for the spread of objectionable content and platform deficiencies, signaling heightened corporate awareness of regulatory pressures.

The ongoing scrutiny underscores the Indian government’s resolve to enforce stricter oversight over global tech firms operating within its borders.
