Common households brace for yet another cost increase as Amul, India's leading dairy brand under GCMMF, rolls out higher prices for its milk lineup starting May 14, 2026. The adjustment, up to Rs 2 per liter, affects flagship products like Taaza, Gold, Shakti, and more, implemented uniformly across the country. GCMMF's official statement highlights relentless cost pressures driving the decision. Feed for livestock, specialized packaging films, and transportation fuels have all seen sharp rises in the past 12 months, squeezing margins despite efficient operations. This is the first revision in nearly a year, post-May 2025, and stays modest at 2.5-3.5%. Crucially, the bulk of proceeds – about 80% – flows back to over 3.6 million milk producers. Recent union-led increases in procurement prices have already boosted farmer incomes by around 3.7%, fostering greater output. Detailed pricing updates for major Gujarat packs illustrate the change: Amul Taaza 500ml jumps from Rs 28 to 29, while the 1L pack moves to Rs 57 from 55. Cow milk 500ml is now Rs 30, Shakti 500ml Rs 32, Tea Special 1L Rs 66, Gold 500ml Rs 35, and Buffalo milk 500ml Rs 39. In the broader context, Amul's strategy reflects a delicate equilibrium: shielding farmers from volatility while keeping essential nutrition accessible. As urban and rural consumers adjust, the dairy giant's model of cooperative empowerment stands as a bulwark against rising economic headwinds.
