Following the violent clashes in Leh on September 24th, triggered by demands for the inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule and granting it statehood, the Head of the Northern Command of the Indian Army met with the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma met with Lieutenant Governor K. Gupta to discuss the current situation in Leh. Discussions focused on the overall security landscape, emerging challenges in the region, and the necessity of improved coordination between the civil administration and the armed forces to maintain peace and stability. The meeting emphasized the importance of preparation and coordination to address any contingency. During the meeting, Lieutenant Governor K. Gupta praised the army’s role in securing borders and ensuring the safety of the people. General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Pratik Sharma reiterated the army’s commitment to the security and integrity of the Union Territory. The meeting was also attended by GOC 14 Corps, Major General Dalbir Singh, MGGGS Northern Command, and Colonel Vikas Vashisht, Deputy Military Advisor to the Northern Army Commander. The violence resulted in four fatalities, with 59 others injured, including 22 police officers. Protesters set fire to a BJP office, engaged in stone-pelting, and torched a CRPF vehicle, leading to a curfew being imposed to restore law and order. Social activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested and shifted to Jodhpur, Rajasthan, under the National Security Act (NSA), accused of inciting the youth during the protests. Internet services were also suspended in Leh as a precautionary measure.
