Opposition Accused of Undermining Democratic Values in Uttar Pradesh Assembly

Lucknow – The third day of the Uttar Pradesh monsoon session was marked by a sharp exchange between the ruling NDA and opposition parties. After the supplementary budget was introduced, members of the Samajwadi Party and the Congress disrupted the proceedings, prompting a strong rebuke from the government.

Minister Manoj Pandey asserted that the opposition’s conduct “insulted the House, disrespected the Speaker’s decisions and hurt democratic and constitutional values.” Cabinet Minister Danish Azad Ansari added that such behavior hampers the state’s development agenda.

Opposition leaders, however, argued that the budget lacks sufficient allocations for key welfare schemes and that their protest was a legitimate expression of dissent. The Speaker eventually suspended the session, citing the need to restore order.

The episode reflects a deepening divide over how legislative business should be conducted and whether protest tactics are compatible with democratic norms.
