Pandit Akash Rawal Explains Rituals at Historic Juana Mahakal Shrine

According to Pandit Akash Rawal, the Juana Mahakal shrine stands as a vital link to the ancient worship of Lord Shiva in Ujjain. The priest notes that the site is positioned just after the Anadi Kalpeshwar Mahadev view point on the exit lane of the main Mahakaleshwar complex, followed by the Saptarshi temple and a small Bal Hanuman shrine.

The priest describes the Panchamrit abhishek ceremony, where devotees offer a mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar while Vedic chants echo through the sanctum. The ritual is believed to be especially effective for fulfilling wishes related to health, longevity, wealth, education, and professional success, as cited in the Skanda Purana.

Special provisions include Rudra abhishek and a range of Vedic mantras such as the Rudra Sukta and Namak‑Chamaka, all performed under the guidance of temple Brahmins. The shrine’s open‑access policy enables worshippers to touch the Shiva lingam directly, a privilege not available in the main Mahakaleshwar sanctum.

The priest also mentions that the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, when visiting Ujjain, routinely includes a family visit to Juana Mahakal, reinforcing the temple’s importance in the state’s religious landscape.
