Parambrata Moves Calcutta High Court Over Gariahat FIR

The Calcutta High Court’s vacation bench will examine a petition filed by actor Parambrata Chattopadhyay on May 29, seeking cancellation of an FIR that accuses him of making inflammatory social-media statements and fueling violence after the 2021 assembly polls. The case stems from a complaint by lawyer Jaydeep Sen. Justice Ajay Kumar Mukherjee’s bench admitted the plea on Wednesday. The same complainant had also triggered an FIR against actress Swastika Mukherjee, who appeared before Gariahat police last week. Parambrata, however, skipped the summons and directly approached the high court. The actor’s decision follows the circulation of a video in which he stated that pressure from former minister Arup Biswas and his brother forced him to back the ruling party. He insisted the choice was made to safeguard his infant child and not out of political malice. The remarks have drawn sharp reactions from both political camps and sections of the film fraternity, raising fresh questions about the climate of fear that reportedly prevailed in the industry during the volatile post-election period.
