Parliament Demands Action on LGBTA+ Rights Committee

In New Delhi on August 5, Congress parliamentarian Dr. Shashi Tharoor raised questions about the sluggish functioning of the Centre’s high‑powered committee tasked with probing issues affecting same‑sex partners. According to official data, the committee – birthed after the Supreme Court’s “Supra” decision – has held only two sessions, the most recent of which occurred more than two years ago, and it has produced no formal report. Tharoor warned that such inaction signals an absence of political commitment to deliver substantive legal safeguards for LGBTA+ citizens. He noted that advisory panels cannot generate enforceable rights, leaving critical areas such as housing, employment, health care, inheritance, shared financial benefits, recognition of close relatives, medical consent, and equal public service access in a legal vacuum. The MP called on the government to disclose why the committee remains virtually inactive and whether it was intended merely as a court‑pleasing gesture.
