During his visit to Cyprus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi experienced a touching gesture of respect when a member of the Nicosia Council, Michaela Kythreoti Mhlapa, touched his feet, a traditional Indian sign of reverence. PM Modi reciprocated by acknowledging her gesture and placing his hand on her head. In a separate ceremony, President Nikos Christodoulides awarded PM Modi the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, the highest honor Cyprus bestows, at the Presidential Palace. PM Modi expressed his gratitude, viewing the honor as a recognition of India’s commitment to peace, security, and shared values. The visit, the first by an Indian PM in over two decades, also included interactions with the Indian diaspora and business leaders, solidifying bilateral ties.
