Priyanka Gandhi, a Congress MP, has sharply criticized the Modi government’s stance on Palestine, labeling it as ‘shameful and devoid of moral rectitude.’ She referenced India’s historical recognition of Palestine in 1988, highlighting the country’s initial support for the Palestinian people’s struggle. She contrasted India’s current policy with its past, emphasizing the importance of upholding values of humanity and justice on the international stage. Gandhi’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about the recognition of Palestine by various nations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed strong opposition to the recognition of a Palestinian state, stating his country will not commit ‘suicide’ due to ‘Europe’s political needs.’ This follows decisions by Australia, Canada, and the UK to recognize Palestine, contingent upon Hamas ceasing its activities. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed these recognitions, viewing them as support for a two-state solution and peace efforts.
