A devastating Air India flight disaster in Ahmedabad resulted in the deaths of 241 individuals, including passengers and crew members. Tragically, out of the 242 people on board, only one survived. The London-bound flight AI-171, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members, departed at 1:17 PM but began its descent shortly thereafter, ultimately crashing into the BJ Medical College and Hospital, causing further casualties on the ground. The confirmed death toll stands at 241, with Ramesh Vishwas Kumar being the only survivor. He, along with several injured individuals, including MBBS students, is currently receiving medical attention at Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad.
Ramesh Vishwas Kumar, a British citizen originally from Daman and Diu, is the sole survivor of the AI-171 plane crash. He is currently under care in Ward C7 of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where he is in a separate, highly secured room for privacy and safety. Ramesh sustained injuries to his chest, eyes, and feet. He recounted that the plane crashed about 30 seconds after takeoff due to a loud noise.
Ramesh had recently visited India to see his family. He was traveling back to the UK with his brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, when the crash occurred. He has been residing in London for the past two decades with his wife and child.
Following the crash, Ramesh described finding bodies all around him, feeling scared, and running from the wreckage. He was assisted by someone who helped him into an ambulance and transported him to the hospital. He is under constant interrogation by a team from the Gujarat Police Crime Branch. The Deputy Collector of Daman and Diu arrived late at night to meet Ramesh, and officials from the British Consulate also visited. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Ramesh Vishwas Kumar on Friday.
