Relief Operations Intensify in Nagaland's Mon District After Catastrophic Monsoon

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, represented by Minister JP Nadda, intensified its relief drive in Mon district, Nagaland, after a series of landslides and flash floods devastated the area last month. Accompanied by Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal and Rajya Sabha MP Fongnon Koniyak, Nadda visited the most severely impacted localities, including the Defence Colony and nearby Techa Ward.

During the site visit, the officials met victims’ families, listened to their grievances, and inspected the makeshift shelters set up at the Koniyak Union office. Nadda’s subsequent post on X underscored the central government’s “deep empathy and unflinching resolve” to provide all possible assistance for rescue, relief and long‑term rehabilitation.

He emphasized that the central administration, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, is maintaining an uninterrupted coordination mechanism with the Nagaland state government. This includes deployment of central disaster response teams, SDRF units, police forces, district administration and volunteer groups to deliver relief kits, medical care and shelter.

The calamities were triggered by relentless monsoon rains; the region logged 83.95 mm of rain on July 19 alone, with a total of 341 mm recorded between July 19 and July 31. The deluge led to multiple landslides, loss of life, widespread property damage, interruption of power and water supply, and severed road connections.

Nadda lauded the efforts of the district magistrate, the Koniyak Students Union, local NGOs and community volunteers operating relief camps, assuring that the central government will continue to monitor the situation and extend any required support until normalcy returns.
