Shillong: In the ongoing investigation into the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, a court has ordered the remand of all five key suspects, including Sonam Raghuvanshi, to eight days of police custody. Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor, the head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and SP (City) of East Khasi Hills, confirmed this development after the accused were presented before the District Court. The accused, which include Sonam Raghuvanshi (wife of Raja Raghuvanshi), Raj Singh Kushwaha, Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand, were subsequently returned to the Shillong Sadar Police Station. The investigation stems from the discovery of Raja Raghuvanshi’s body in a gorge near Sohra, close to Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, on June 2. Raja and his wife, Sonam, were on their honeymoon in the northeastern state in May 2025 and had been reported missing earlier during the trip. Following the discovery of the body, Sonam was found near a roadside dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur highway. Sonam’s brother, Govind, has publicly stated his firm belief in her involvement, demanding severe punishment, including hanging if found guilty. He has also distanced his family from Sonam and apologized to Raja’s family. Kiran Raghuvanshi, Raja’s sister-in-law, revealed Sonam’s constant use of two phones, indicating the possibility of hidden communications. Vivek Syiem, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills, noted the existence of evidence pointing to Sonam’s involvement, although a definitive conclusion awaits thorough interrogation.
