Southwest Bay Circulation Triggers Moderate Rain in Western Ghats and Nearby Areas

A gentle atmospheric flow originating from the southwest Bay of Bengal and moving over Tamil Nadu toward the northern Kerala coast is maintaining a weak circulation about 5.8 km above sea level. This feature, combined with a lower‑tropospheric vortex over the northern Tamil coast, will bring moderate rainfall and thunderstorms to certain districts of the Western Ghats on Saturday. Light to moderate showers are also expected in select pockets of northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, with wind speeds of 40‑50 km per hour. The rest of Tamil Nadu may witness intermittent rain and occasional lightning. By Sunday, conditions should ease, leaving only isolated light rain in a few Western Ghats locations. Daytime temperatures will stay near normal, while Chennai’s high will be 36‑37°C and its low 27‑28°C.
