The Shia Muslim community in Srinagar held a solemn procession to mark Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, remembering Imam Hussein’s sacrifice at the Battle of Karbala. Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, participated in the event, offering water to mourners along the traditional route from Bota Kadal to Imambara Zadibal. Thousands gathered under tight security to pay their respects to Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was martyred in 680 CE. The administration permitted the procession while enforcing strict guidelines to maintain communal harmony. Lieutenant Governor Sinha also presented a ‘chadar’ to Zuljanah, Imam Hussein’s horse, as a symbol of unity. Security forces ensured a safe passage. This marked the third consecutive year the procession was allowed after a 35-year ban, indicating a return to peace. The event concluded peacefully at Imambara Zadibal, where Zuljanah was honored.
