Madhya Pradesh's erratic monsoon onset turned deadly in Shahdol when a colossal Mahua tree succumbed to raging winds at Girwa's Haat Bazaar, fatally crushing a middle-aged woman. The mishap unfolded late Friday in Amlai thana jurisdiction, plunging the vibrant market into mourning. Sogi Bai Mahra, 46, from Malaya Keshavahi, had set up her vegetable cart as usual, unaware of the impending disaster. A ferocious dust storm, laced with rain, snapped the towering tree, which plummeted straight onto her, ending her life on the spot. The crowded marketplace erupted in screams as vendors and buyers fled the wreckage, with the fallen trunk blocking pathways and causing a temporary logjam. Amlai police rushed to the site upon receiving frantic calls, securing the perimeter and coordinating with forensic teams. SHO Bhupendra Mani Pandey detailed to reporters how the gale-force winds were the culprit, emphasizing the woman's role as her family's primary provider through her market trade. This sorrowful episode highlights the vulnerability of rural markets to nature's whims, especially with Madhya Pradesh grappling with unpredictable weather swings. Families in the area are rallying to support the bereaved relatives, while authorities probe if any prior warnings about the tree's stability were ignored. Looking ahead, IMD forecasts intense heatwaves gripping the state until May 18. Malwa's key cities like Indore and Ujjain, alongside Bundelkhand and Gwalior regions, brace for 46°C highs and blistering hot winds. Heatwave red alerts urge precautions against dehydration and sunstroke, contrasting sharply with the recent stormy outbursts.
