The Supreme Court has instructed the Indian government to explore ‘informal channels’ in an effort to save Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, who is facing execution in Yemen. This follows the Centre’s assertion that its options are limited. A petition filed by the ‘Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council’ prompted the court’s directive, seeking diplomatic intervention with Yemeni authorities. Nimisha Priya is scheduled to be executed on July 16. The Attorney General stated the government’s difficulties, citing Yemen’s sensitive status and the private nature of ‘blood money’ negotiations. The court has scheduled the next hearing for July 18 and requested updates from the government regarding any positive developments.
