Supreme Court Surrender Offer Leads to Patiala Arrest of Ex‑AIG

A former Assistant Inspector General of Punjab Police, Rajjit Singh Hundal, who had been absconding since April 2023, turned himself in at Patiala following a surrender offer to the Supreme Court.

Hundel, dismissed for alleged involvement in narcotics trafficking, forced levies and corruption, was tracked down by an Anti‑Narcotics Task Force after completing technical and financial investigations.

The DGP, Gaurav Yadav, confirmed that the team seized the ex‑officer and will now seek a remand order to interrogate him on multiple charges, including a drug case tied to another dismissed officer, Inderjit Singh, a Prevention of Corruption Act case, and a vigilance bureau probe into disproportionate assets.

During a hearing on September 10, senior counsel Amit Rawal informed the bench that Hundal was prepared to surrender. The judges directed him to appear, postponing the next hearing to October 1, after which he surrendered in Patiala.

Hundal has challenged the proceedings, demanding that a neutral agency conduct the investigation, asserting that the Punjab Police cannot provide a fair inquiry. His legal challenge remains pending before the Supreme Court.
