President Donald Trump has announced a tariff of up to 50 percent on India, leading to tensions between the two countries. This decision is expected to impact Indian businesses. Amidst these tariff concerns, a meeting between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi could take place next month.
PM Modi may travel to the United States to address the United Nations General Assembly. He is scheduled to speak on September 26, according to the UNGA speaker list, although this is still tentative.
PM to Participate in UNGA
The 80th session of the UNGA will commence on September 9. PM Modi may visit the US to attend this General Assembly. The high-level general debate will run from September 23 to 29, with Brazil traditionally being the first speaker, followed by the United States. President Donald Trump will address the General Assembly on September 23. Along with India, heads of government from Israel, China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh will also address the UN General Assembly on September 26.
PM and Trump Meeting Possible
The United States initially imposed a 25 percent tariff on India. Following this, the US announced an additional 25 percent tariff due to India’s oil trade with Russia, leading to a total tariff of 50 percent. These tariffs have strained relations between the two nations. In light of these tensions, it is believed that the PM’s visit could lay the groundwork for a meeting with President Trump. Many diplomatic experts believe a face-to-face meeting between Modi and Trump could help mend the relationship.
Previously, PM Modi visited the US in February. During his visit, he held bilateral talks with President Trump. A joint statement issued after their meeting announced plans to negotiate the first phase of a mutually beneficial, multi-sector bilateral trade agreement by 2025.
India’s Response to Tariffs
Responding to the tariffs imposed by the US, India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated that targeting India is unjustified. Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to protect its national interests and economic security.
