The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is urging parents and guardians to promptly complete the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) for children who are seven years old or older and have not yet updated their Aadhaar biometric details. This update is critical for ensuring children’s seamless access to essential services such as school admissions, entrance exams, scholarships, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes. UIDAI emphasizes that a biometrically updated Aadhaar card is essential for uninterrupted service access. Initially, when enrolling children under five for Aadhaar, only photographs and demographic information are recorded, as biometric data collection isn’t possible at that age. The first MBU, ideally done between ages 5 and 7, is free. Updates after age seven incur a fee of Rs 100. Failure to update within the stipulated time may lead to Aadhaar deactivation, potentially affecting access to related services. Timely biometric updates are vital to maintain the accuracy, reliability, and utility of a child’s Aadhaar data, which serves as a crucial identification tool for various government schemes and institutions.
