The Varanasi ropeway project is currently undergoing intensive trial runs in the historic city, with operations anticipated to commence by December of this year. Despite facing some delays, the administration has intensified efforts to ensure the project’s timely completion. Varanasi is poised to become the first city in the country to boast a ropeway transportation system.
Trial runs began in July and are ongoing to evaluate operational effectiveness. This process is designed to identify and address any potential issues before the system’s public launch. Originally slated for completion by September 30, the deadline was extended to December. The ropeway will connect Cantt station to Godowlia, encompassing five stations along its route. These include Varanasi Cantonment, Kashi Vidyapeeth, Rath Yatra, Girja Ghar, and Godowlia.
The ropeway service is expected to significantly reduce travel time, completing the journey in approximately 15 minutes, a substantial improvement over the 45-50 minutes typically required by road. The project is being fast-tracked to meet the December operational deadline. The foundation stone for this project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2023.
