The echoes of the SIR (Systematic Irregularities in Registration) controversy resonated in Parliament on the 17th day of the monsoon session. Opposition members created a ruckus, throwing paper at the Speaker’s chair and engaging in vociferous sloganeering. Consequently, both houses of Parliament were adjourned until August 18th. Sources suggest the government might decide to adjourn the session sine die, especially considering the upcoming five-day break. The session is scheduled to be in recess from August 13th to August 15th. With no sittings scheduled for Saturday and Sunday (August 16-17), the proceedings are set to resume on August 18th. The monsoon session of Parliament is slated to conclude on August 21st. There’s speculation about an early adjournment of the session, though no official announcement has been made. The opposition has been aggressive on the issue of SIR since its inception in Bihar. Protests have erupted from Bihar to Delhi. Under SIR, over 65 lakh names were removed in Bihar, including 22 lakh deceased voters, 36 lakh shifted voters, and 7 lakh voters with duplicate entries. The opposition deems this as a hasty decision. Intense disruption has occurred in the monsoon session of Parliament due to this issue. The opposition has been insistent on discussing it since the session began. The disruption has hindered the smooth functioning of Parliament. On Tuesday, opposition members in the Lok Sabha engaged in intense sloganeering and threw paper towards the chair. As a result of the uproar, discussions on bills have been put on hold. Several bills were passed without any discussion.
On Tuesday, the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill- 2025 and the National Sports Governance Bill- 2025 were passed by the Rajya Sabha. The Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2025 was passed in the Lok Sabha. On Monday, eight bills were approved without discussion.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed that such behavior by the opposition undermines the dignity of Parliament. He stated that although he has spent his life in the opposition, he has never witnessed such conduct. He noted that while they also protested, they did so in a civil manner, emphasizing that members are sent to the House to work, not to throw paper at the chair. On Monday, opposition MPs demonstrated strong unity against vote theft and SIR. Rahul Gandhi, along with 300 opposition MPs, conducted a march to the Election Commission. Several opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and Akhilesh Yadav, were detained but later released. The MPs chanted slogans such as ‘Stop Vote Theft’ and ‘No to Dictatorship.’ Rahul Gandhi recently accused the Election Commission of vote theft during a press conference. He stated that the same voter’s name was registered in multiple locations, and some individuals voted twice. Rahul cited the example of the Mahadevapura assembly seat in Karnataka, where he claimed over 1 lakh votes were stolen, and a woman voted twice.
