Guwahati: Marking International Biodiversity Day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated the government’s determination to clear forests of illegal occupation and end poaching. In a post on platform X, he praised Assam’s lush landscapes, from the dense Dehing Patkai forests to the wetlands of Maguri Beel, calling them a gift of nature. He said the state is working tirelessly to protect its biodiversity hotspots and ensure that wildlife sanctuaries remain free from encroachment. Recent drives have removed illegal settlers from reserved forest areas, while surveillance around national parks has been strengthened. Authorities note fewer incidents of rhino poaching compared to previous years. The Chief Minister’s message underlines a long-term vision of an ecologically secure Assam where future generations can experience its natural wealth without the threat of habitat destruction or species loss.
