200 matches and counting: Vivek Sagar’s enduring legacy in Indian hockey

Kakamigahara, 24 September – The Indian men's hockey side celebrated a historic moment on Thursday when midfield stalwart Vivek Sagar logged his 200th senior international fixture during the Asian Games 2026 showdown with South Korea.

Since his senior debut in 2018, the 26‑year‑old has been integral to India’s midfield, offering calm leadership and tactical flexibility. He was part of the bronze‑medal squads at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympics, and helped India clinch gold at the previous Asian Games while taking home bronze in Jakarta 2018.

His medal haul also includes silvers from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the 2018 Champions Trophy in Breda. The midfielder contributed to India’s gold runs at the Asian Champions Trophy in 2023 and 2024 and was a member of the victorious 2025 Asia Cup team. The Arjuna Award in 2021 honored his consistent performance.

Head coach Craig Fulton presented Sagar with a specially designed jersey to mark the milestone. Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey praised the player’s unwavering dedication, calling the 200‑cap achievement a testament to his passion for the sport. Secretary Bholanath Singh emphasized that maintaining such a high standard over a long period showcases the discipline required at the highest level.
