Akib Nabi’s Domestic Dominance Paves Way for International Debut

Akib Nabi’s journey from the hills of Jammu and Kashmir to India’s Test XI underscores the power of consistent domestic performance. Replacing the injured Jasprit Bumrah, Nabi becomes the first cricketer from the state to feature in the senior Test lineup.

Born on 4 November 1996 in Baramulla’s Shiri, Nabi grew up in a teacher’s household. While his early ambition was football, his love for fast bowling soon took precedence, with regular practice on a ground near Srinagar sharpening his craft.

Known as the “Baramulla Express,” his ability to generate swing at 125‑140 km/h quickly made him the leading pacer for Jammu and Kashmir. Initially a red‑ball specialist, he adapted to white‑ball formats and shone in the Ranji Trophy, collecting 104 wickets across the 2024‑25 and 2025‑26 seasons. In 2025‑26 he topped the wicket‑taking chart with 60 victims at an average of 12.65, guiding his side to a historic Ranji triumph and earning Player of the Tournament honors.

During the 2025 Saeed Mushak Ali Trophy, Nabi’s 15 wickets in seven games attracted IPL interest, leading Delhi Capitals to purchase him for INR 8.40 crore ahead of the 2026 edition. Although his first IPL exposure was limited to five matches without significant impact, his domestic record remained impressive.

His recent stint with India A on a Sri Lanka tour resulted in six wickets in two matches, adding to his cumulative statistics: 162 first‑class wickets at 18.63, 56 List‑A scalps, and 43 T20 dismissals.

With a right‑hand pace that consistently breaches the 130 km/h mark, Nabi now has the platform to translate his domestic supremacy into Test success, contributing to India’s bowling arsenal on the world stage.
