Arshdeep Singh on Pitch Read and Personal Celebration Stories

Indian cricket’s rising star Arshdeep Singh has shared candid insights following the first ODI against New Zealand in Auckland. The left-arm quick admitted that a lapse in patience nearly cost his side in the final stages, as greed momentarily overshadowed their game plan.

Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, India restricted New Zealand to a modest total. The game reached a critical juncture when Blair Tickner and Jacob Duffy forged a 39-run stand that took the score to 185. Although Tickner accelerated the scoring rate, hitting 34 off 23 balls, his assault on the Indian attack peaked in the 38th over where he cleared the boundary three times off Arshdeep’s arm.

India’s pace unit ultimately outsmarted the Black Caps’ tailenders. Arshdeep finished with 4 wickets, Gurnoor Barar claimed 3, and Anshul Kumar took 2, securing a comprehensive victory.

Speaking about the closing phases, Arshdeep emphasized the value of sticking to fundamentals. “I have to be honest, we got a touch greedy toward the end,” he said. “All we had to do was continue bowling the way we had been, and the wickets would fall naturally.”

The Eden Park surface proved highly effective for the Indian visitors. Arshdeep highlighted how the transition from subcontinental pitches to the New Zealand conditions provided fresh advantages. “It is fantastic bowling here,” he noted. “Coming from back home, feeling that seam and bounce comes naturally. The sky was clear, and the wind assisted our swing and movement.”

India’s short-ball strategy was a masterclass in execution. By reading the pitch correctly, the bowlers targeted areas that troubled New Zealand’s batters. “I could see the wicket offering something special,” Arshdeep shared. “We decided to attack the length aggressively. They were playing for shots we didn’t want them to play, and that pace and length combination did the trick.”

Away from the tactics, Arshdeep revealed the heartfelt inspiration behind his post-wicket routine. He joked about his ongoing search for a ten-wicket match haul, playfully stating his favorite remains the yet-unrealized fifth wicket. The celebration itself is a cherished routine shared with his girlfriend. “We invented those dance steps,” he explained. “They are our secret way of turning a bad day around. This celebration is a small token of love for her.”
