Usman Khawaja experienced back spasms during the opening day of the Ashes Test, prompting a brief departure from the field. The Australian batsman was undergoing treatment for the issue when England’s batting order collapsed in the second innings. Due to the timing of his absence, Khawaja was unable to open the batting and came in at number four. Australian captain Pat Cummins, who is sidelined with his own back injury, provided an update on Khawaja’s condition. He explained that Khawaja received treatment, including heat and stretching, but missed the crucial window to bat due to a flurry of wickets. Cummins expressed optimism that Khawaja could manage the niggle with anti-inflammatories and continue playing. The day itself was historic, marking the first time in 116 years that 18 or more wickets fell on the opening day of an Ashes Test. This remarkable turnaround saw England bowled out for 172 after reaching 160/5. The 19 wickets lost on day one in Perth also represent the most in the last century, surpassing previous records from 2001 and 2005.
