Chronicle of India’s 200-Run T20 Performances Against Afghanistan

Since the first meeting in 2010, India and Afghanistan have contested nine men’s T20 internationals. Four innings have broken the 200‑run barrier – three belonging to India and one where both sides achieved the feat.

The inaugural 200‑run total for India came on 3 November 2021 at the T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul forged a 140‑run partnership for the first wicket; Rahul fell on 69, while Rohit reached 74 off 47 balls with eleven fours. Afghanistan’s reply collapsed at 144/7, Karim Janat scoring 42, Mohammad Nabi 35, and Mohammed Shami claiming three wickets. India triumphed by 66 runs.

The second instance occurred on 8 September 2022 in Dubai during the Asia Cup. India chose to bat, amassing 212/2, driven by Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 122. Afghanistan could only post 111/8, with Ibrahim Zadran staying unbeaten on 64. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s spell of 4‑4‑4‑0 (four wickets in four overs) helped India win by 101 runs.

A third Indian 200‑run inning was recorded on 17 January 2024 in Bengaluru, the third match of Afghanistan’s tour of India. Captain Rohit Sharma made an unbeaten 121, steering India to 212/4. Afghanistan answered with exactly 212 runs for the loss of six wickets, forcing a Super Over. The first Super Over ended 16‑16, leading to a second where India managed 11 runs while Afghanistan managed just one, giving India the victory.

These four landmark innings illustrate India’s strong batting displays against Afghanistan in T20 cricket, while the 2024 match remains the sole occasion where both teams surpassed 200 runs in the same game.
