Critics Claim Jersey Colour Shift Reflects Government Influence

Delhi, 30 July — A decision by Hockey India to replace the Indian hockey team’s blue kit with a saffron one has ignited a heated political dispute. The ruling party presented the change as a display of national pride, whereas opposition figures argued it was taken under the government's directive.

Congress MP Manoj Kumar remarked that the ruling party can dictate jersey colours while in power, but the nation’s tricolour will retain its authentic meaning over time.

Congress MP Tariq Anwar described the move as evidence of the government's limited foresight, questioning the necessity of “saffron‑ising” sports.

Former captain Viren Rasquinha’s associate, RJD MP Sudhakar Singh, sarcastically suggested that officials may even paint trees orange in the future.

Former international player Jalaluddin insisted that the blue jersey was an integral part of Indian hockey’s identity, representing the team in Olympics, World Cups, and other major events. He reminded listeners of India’s unparalleled Olympic medal record and ongoing success on the global stage.

Akhil Bharatiya Samaj Party chief Chandrashekhar Azad warned that the decision might aim to align national symbols with majority sentiment, noting saffron’s historical significance dating back to ancient times and urging restraint from colour‑driven politics.

Swami Gopalacharya echoed the viewpoint, stating that a saffron jersey symbolizes Indian identity. The controversy continues as the team readies for forthcoming tournaments.
